(CNN Spanish) –– Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled to decriminalize abortion at the federal level and deemed the current prohibition of the procedure in the Penal Code unconstitutional.
“The First Chamber ruled that the legal system that penalizes abortion in the Federal Criminal Code is unconstitutional, since it violates the human rights of women and people with the capacity to gestate,” the Supreme Court published on social networks.
Abortion has already been decriminalized in 12 Mexican states, and the most recent sentence was announced a few days ago. The Supreme Court ruled for the first time that it was unconstitutional to criminalize abortion in 2021.
