Mexico’s Feminist Revolution: Sheinbaum Breaks Ground with Historic Constitutional Reforms

MEXICO CITY.- This Thursday morning, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardoin his second press conference, presented his first bills in favor of women that would guarantee the “substantive equality” in the Constitutionalso aim to close the gender pay gap and force the murders of women to be investigated with a “gender perspective.”

“(I present) all the initiatives that we are sending today to the Senate of the Republic for constitutional reforms and laws for the support and protection of women. As the first president of Mexico, our obligation is to protect women,” declared the president.

The proposal contemplates modifying six articles of the Constitution and seven legal systems.

Substantive equality

The biggest reform is to establish in article 4 of the Constitution the “right to substantive equality” y “to a life free of violence”hence “all laws and all regulations” They must from now on “consider the particularities of women and their human rights,” explained the Mexican leader.

“What do we mean by substantive equality? One thing is the equality of men and women before the law and the other is also the special characteristics that women have, so that is why we talk about substantive equality because all women’s rights must also be addressed,” she highlighted.

These are the first reforms presented by Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, while the country faces a wave of sexist violence with an average of 10 women murdered a day.

Modifications to article 21 of the Constitution
