This Saturday, the Mexican government announced a new measure to transport migrants from its southern border who have an appointment scheduled through the ‘CBP One’ application, of the United States Customs and Border Protection Office, in order to request asylum in that country.

The Ministry of the Interior (Segob) and the National Institute of Migration (INM) announced in a statement the creation of an “emerging safe mobility corridor,” designed to facilitate the land transportation of foreigners with scheduled appointments with U.S. authorities.

The initiative comes just a week after CBP announced that migrants can schedule appointments to apply for asylum in the border states of Chiapas and Tabasco in southern Mexico.

Mexico and good news for appointments with CBP One

The new measure, which comes just over two months before the presidential elections in the United States, aims to prevent saturation on the shared border with Mexico.

According to data from the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the daily detention of undocumented migrants at the border has decreased by 77% since December.

The Mexican government also reported that, since the implementation of this new rule, “300 people who requested an appointment through ‘CBP One’ in Tabasco and Chiapas received a response to their request within a few days.”

The CBP One app, available for free download, allows users to register their personal information, including an image of their government-issued identification, to request an interview with immigration officers.
