Mexico goes to the International Court of Justice this Monday to denounce Ecuador’s responsibility for violations of International Law, after the police assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito last Friday for the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.
In a press conference, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena said that her country will also go to multilateral organizations to condemn the actions of the Ecuadorian Government that caused the breaking of diplomatic relations between both nations.
“Starting tomorrow (Monday) we will be going to the International Court of Justice, where we will be presenting this sad case and of course we will go to all the regional and international multilateral forums that correspond so that this, first of all, is condemned in its entirety. the international community,” he said.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Mexican Government thanked the international community for its solidarity and noted that at least 18 Latin American countries and 10 European countries expressed their support, as well as the United States and Canada, in North America.
He also thanked international organizations, multiple parliamentarians and the global community for their messages of support, in the face of what he described as “such a regrettable event.”
‘We feel outraged’
Regarding the invasion of Ecuadorian police into the Mexican Embassy in Quito and the attack on Mexican diplomats, the Mexican Foreign Minister stated that it was an outrage and violation of the immunity of the diplomatic facility and its staff.
“We feel frankly outraged because the immunity of the Embassy and the diplomatic staff was violated and in addition the entry was with great violence and, above all, and of course, without authorization,” he said.
Due to this fact, Mexico immediately broke diplomatic relations with the Government of Ecuador, after the instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which led to the definitive closure of the Mexican Embassy in Quito.
