The Mexican Government’s Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar) announced that in September it will inaugurate the center for migrant care in Tapachula, the main city on the southern border of Mexicoto address the migratory flow, which has almost tripled so far this year.
Andrés Ramírez Silva, coordinator of Comar, said in an interview that Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of the Interior Luisa María Alcalde, and other high-ranking officials will be present at this symbolic inauguration for a meeting to coordinate assistance to migrants.
The director of Comar visited the facilities of the centre, which is 60% complete, so he hopes that by November or December at least one stage will be finished.
“Now in Tapachula it will be the third with a very important multipurpose model and, in addition, this center allows for the attention in a single space of various categories of human mobility, although mainly those seeking international protection, which are the ones that basically come to Comar,” he said.
Migrant Care Center
From January to July, Comar received 46,920 asylum applications, representing a year-on-year decrease of almost 47%.
According to the Government’s Migration Policy Unit, irregular migration through Mexico increased by 193% compared to the previous year during the first half of the year, exceeding 712,000 people.
The U.S. government plans to allow migrants to request appointments with authorities through the CBP One app without having to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.
