Mexico takes the gold medal as an exporter; maintains sustained growth in the country

Since 2007, the first Friday in August is celebrated around the world as International Beer Day, one of the most important industries for Mexico and which makes it a global power.

According to Cerveceros de México, our country is the fourth largest beer producer in the world and in 2023 it was the main exporter. Thus, data from INEGI indicate that the beer industry represents 1.6% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

At the national level, there are 5 thousand barley producers who supply their production and contribute significantly to the country through the generation of more than 55 thousand direct jobs and 700 thousand indirect jobs.

In detail, INEGI data shows that of the total beer production at an international level, Mexico is the fourth most important beer producer with 7.5% of the total, followed by China with 19.1%, the United States with 10.3% and Brazil with 7.8% and surpassing Germany, a traditional beer-drinking country, which occupies fifth place with 4.6 percent.

Since 2013, the country has seen an average annual growth of 4.9% in beer production, reaching 136.4 million hectoliters in 2023, placing the beer agroindustry in 19th place out of 288 of the most important economic activities in the country.

Beer also accounts for 30% of Mexico’s exports, more than double that of any other country.

Americans’ favorite beer is Mexican In the United States, beers made by Mexicans are the most preferred and enjoyed. Corona and Modelo Especial, produced in Mexico by Constellation Brands with the participation of more than 5,000 collaborators, continue to be the most preferred beers among American consumers.

Potential for non-alcoholic beer consumption, Grupo Modelo highlights that while 50% of adults in Mexico are beer consumers, only 5% are non-alcoholic beer consumers. This means that 9 out of 10 beer consumers are potential consumers of non-alcoholic beer.

Mexicans enjoy non-alcoholic beer at key moments, especially during meals.

“In Mexico, this trend reflects a change in consumer habits, with a growing interest in options for moderation. Spain and the Netherlands have been the countries with a weight of 6% of the industry, while Mexico registers 0.6%; however, it has opened a great opportunity in the market with a booming demand,” said Modelo.
