After reviewing the case of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, the Mexican government found evidence that he is “or could be” politically persecuted by Ecuador.
«I cannot say anything in advance, but I do want to say that Mexico has thoroughly reviewed and found evidence that Jorge Glas is or could be a politically persecuted person.“, said Mexican diplomat Alicia Bárcena during the extraordinary virtual meeting between foreign ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
The head of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reiterated the country’s indignation over the violent raid by Ecuadorian authorities on its embassy in Quito, which occurred last Friday and culminated in the arrest of Glas, who had been seeking political asylum at the facility since last December.
«There is no fact, nothing that can justify, there is no justification for breaking into an embassy, and in this case the Mexican Embassy, in a violent manner or physically attacking the dignity of diplomatic personnel.”Bárcena replied during the meeting called by Honduras to address the crisis.
He also criticized Ecuador for expressing its anger in this way at the statements made by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador regarding the murder of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio and the electoral consequences for the current president, Daniel Noboa.
«If Ecuador had a different interpretation than Mexico and was upset by President López Obrador’s morning conference, there are always other types of procedures to express annoyance and above all to say: we have differences regarding the interpretation of the Vienna or Caracas Convention.“, he noted.
