Mexico rejected 1,463 shipments due to pests in 2023

MEXICO CITY (EFE).— The federal government rejected the entry of 1,463 shipments of agri-food products in 2023 for detecting 258 pests, as reported yesterday by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).

The agency stated in a statement that the pests were “of quarantine importance, so the goods were destroyed or returned to the country of origin, thereby preserving the health status of Mexico, for the benefit of the primary sector and the country’s consumers. ”.

Of the total rejected shipments, which together were more than 263,000 tons, 58% percent were merchandise of animal origin, 40% of vegetable origin and 2% of aquaculture.

The five most rejected products, the bulletin says, were meat and poultry offal, 11% of the total; live horses, 10%; pork, 9%; grapes, 6%, and balanced foods and supplements for animals, 4%.

Agents from the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica) inspected almost 47 million tons of agricultural, aquaculture and fishing merchandise.

Among the main pests detected, Sader listed specimens of fruit flies, weeds, and nematodes, which are extremely thin parasitic worms.

“One of the most relevant pests intercepted was the Khapra weevil, considered in world agriculture as one of the most devastating to grains and seeds,” the agency indicated.

The largest rejection of shipments occurred at the Agricultural Health Inspection Office (OISA) of Reynosa, in Tamaulipas, where 247 were intercepted.

It was followed by Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, also on the border, with 196 shipments; the port of Manzanillo, Colima, with 183; the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), where 174 loads were retained, and the border Mexicali, Baja California, with 143.

“These actions help protect the national agri-food heritage, for the benefit of farmers and ranchers, who have the possibility of being more productive and competitive by maintaining a health status that allows them to export their products to more than 160 countries,” said Sader.
