Mexico registers the lowest number of kidnappings since the beginning of López Obrador’s six-year term

Since the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador began, on December 1, 2018, the civil association Stop Kidnapping has recorded 4,305 kidnappings, which means an average of four kidnappings a day in the country, 28 weekly and 116 monthly.

Mexico City, Jan 18 (EFE).- Mexico registered in December from 2021 59 kidnappings, the lowest figure since the beginning of the current administration in December 2018, the civil association reported on Tuesday Stop kidnapping.

“In December, the lowest number of kidnappings was reported during the current administration,” the NGO reported on Tuesday when giving its monthly data report, which also includes a count from the end of 2018 to date.

During the government of the President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which began on December 1, 2018, the NGO recorded 4,305 kidnappings, which means four kidnappings a day in the country, 28 weekly and 116 monthly.

Of this figure, 942 were located in the media by the organization. And of these, 115 have already been integrated into investigation folders in the state prosecutor’s offices, but 827 are not counted in official figures, the report denounced.

The states with the highest number of kidnappings in this period were Veracruz with 815, the State of Mexico with 705, Mexico City with 375, Puebla with 181 and Morelos with 171.

Although the figure is high, it represents a decrease of 39.5 percent compared to the same period of the mandate of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018), although an increase of 67.4 percent when compared to the same period of the administration of Felipe Calderón ( 2006-2012).

ANNUAL AND MONTHLY DECREASE

The number of kidnappings also decreased by 15.2 percent in 2021 compared to 2020, according to the organization’s monthly report, since in 2020 they had counted 1,204 and in 2021 there were 1,200.

In relation to November 2021, Stop kidnapping registered a decrease of 26.7 percent in the number of victims who suffered this crime, since during November there were 116 victims while in December there were 85.

The investigation folders initiated by kidnapping also decreased: in December they were 59 while in November they were 72.

Meanwhile, the number of detainees increased 5.8 percent monthly, going from 120 alleged perpetrators arrested in November to 127 in December.

Of the 59 kidnappings registered in December, 11 were in the State of Mexico, seven in Veracruz, five in Chihuahua, four in Quintana Roo and four in Tamaulipas.

Mexico has recorded the most violent periods in its history in the first two years of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s term, with 34,690 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.

According to preliminary data from the federal government released last Thursday, Mexico closed 2021 with 33,410 intentional homicides, a reduction of 4.1 percent compared to 34,554 murders in 2020.
