Mexico recognizes the murder of 15 candidates for the June elections

This Tuesday, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico, Rosa Icela Rodríguezconfirmed that 15 candidates for the June 2 elections have been murdered to date.

The official explained at a press conference that two were officially candidates, five were pre-candidates and the remaining eight were listed as candidates, since she had made public her desire to appear in the process.

According to Rodríguez, the government of Mexico has received more than 100 applications from candidates seeking protection in the face of the risk of violence in the country.

“In the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador we are committed to protecting candidates for the different popularly elected positions, that is why there is a job, a plan to protect them and to have a presence of the National Guard in those areas where there is a problem. of insecurity”held.

However, the figure shared this Tuesday by the official is lower than that of the consulting firm Data Int., which revealed the murder of 28 applicants. For its part, Data Cívica reflects 21 violent deaths since last year.

Regarding the possibility of protecting the candidates, Rodríguez explained: “As of April 1, we have 108 requests for protection, 86 of which have been attended to, 10 were declined and 12 are in risk analysis.”.
