“Mexico is free and we don’t want walls”

These statements by the Mexican president are made in the context of the debate on the migration policies proposed by Candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump for the 2024 elections. Both candidates have outlined their plans for migration management if they are elected.

On the one hand, the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has advocated for a comprehensive approach to migration, which includes regulation through visas for workers and asylum and refuge programs.

His position is based on modifying and establishing more inclusive and fair immigration reforms, with an emphasis on protecting the rights of immigrants and improving conditions both in the US and in their countries of origin.

On the other hand, his opponent, former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump, insists on building a border wall between the US and Mexico, as well as increasing deportations and economic sanctions.

Trump also proposes increasing border surveillance and implementing stricter immigration policies, with rigorous enforcement of existing laws.

In Mexico we do not want walls or mistreatment, says AMLO

For his part, López Obrador responded: “We do not want walls, nor militarization of the border, nor mistreatment of our compatriots. Do not forget that Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country; we are not a colony of any foreign country.”

With border security being one of the main issues in the US presidential campaign of both Republicans and Democrats, the Mexican president has asked for support for Mexican migrants. He recalled that compatriots abroad have played a crucial role in turning remittances into the second largest source of international foreign currency for Mexico, with almost 65 billion dollars annually.

“A round of applause for migrants, that is why we are going to defend them, whether they like it or not,” Manuel López Obrador

Furthermore, their stance comes after warnings about the business environment issued by rating agencies such as Fitch Ratings and financial institutions such as Morgan Stanley and Citibanamex. These warnings have generated concerns among American investors, according to the United States and Canadian ambassadors in Mexico.
