Mexico Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Wave: Extreme Temperatures and Climate Trends

Mexico City.- During the third heat wave, which has been registered in the country since June 1, various records for maximum temperatures have been broken, the general coordinator of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), Alejandra Méndez Girón, reported on Tuesday.

During the weekly session of the Technical Committee for the Operation of Hydraulic Works (CTOOH), Méndez Girón reported that the heat wave, whose intensity and duration allow it to be considered abnormal, is expected to last for at least two more days.

The average maximum temperature registered nationwide during this month, he specified, has risen to 34.8 degrees Celsius, up from 34.1 in 2019 and 33.5 in 2020.

Meanwhile, he added, historical maximum temperature records were presented in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, with 47.4 degrees on June 19; in Guadalajara, Jalisco, with 40.5 degrees on June 13; in Durango, Durango, with 40.3 degrees on June 14, and at the Tacubaya Observatory, Mexico City, with 33.6 degrees on June 15.

The Tacubaya record, the average record for June, of 31.1 degrees, is 7.4 degrees higher than that of 2021.

Méndez Girón remarked that the decrease in the average temperature will be gradual.

“The high pressure system associated with the heat wave, which has been covering the entire country, is expected to move to the northwest (…) Fortunately we have an influx of humid air from the Pacific in that area,” he said.

“The sensation of high temperatures will persist, but not as strong as in recent days, due to the entry of humidity.”

The official warned once again that the high pressure system has delayed the presence of rains and other weather phenomena, which were expected to be abundant this month.

“There is a lag in terms of cyclonic systems of almost a month,” he said.

However, Méndez Girón added, with the weakening of the high pressure system and the appearance of El Niño, a rebound in precipitation is expected from July.
