Mexicans Against Corruption responds to the UIF

MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) responded to the information released yesterday in the morning press conference, in which the head of the UIF, Pablo Gómez, accused foreign financing for the organization.

The civil association described the action as a threat to freedom of expression and accused President López Obrador of harassment and defamation.

“In addition to violating the right to protection of personal data of donors, suppliers and staff of Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has once again threatened freedom of expression. MCCI has been harassed and defamed 265 times since the morning press conferences,” she said.

In a statement, MCCI clarified in 11 points the situation regarding the statements made by the president and Pablo Gómez Álvarez.

Among other things, he accused them of disclosing taxpayers’ tax information, which, he says, is not only an abuse of power, but a violation of the Federal Tax Code. “Revealing information about our organization seeks to intimidate all the people who donate, collaborate or work at MCCI,” he says.

He said it is false that MCCI does not disclose its finances, since, like any authorized donor, it is required to submit its transparency declaration every year according to the law. “We have done so since 2016 and we have never received any observations…”

MCCI stated that, contrary to what the President claims, its work has been tied to its social purpose, “and this is confirmed by more than 1,200 publications that reveal corruption and impunity in our country.”

“MCCI does not serve the interests of individuals or foreign governments. Our research programs are decided without any external mediation by our governing body,” he said.

“Questioning the government’s public policies, documenting corruption, monitoring the use of public resources, exposing the lack of transparency, demanding that the government guarantee people’s rights and fulfill its obligations, far from being a crime, is an obligation of society,” says Mexicans Against Corruption.
