BY Alejandro Feregrino-. When Alan Estrada was told that visiting the Titanic wreckage was a real possibility, he didn’t think twice.

I was in the midst of a pandemic and was looking for a way to promote his Youtube channel ‘Alan x the world’, at a time when travel was restricted in much of the planet. Then, two of his collaborators sent him the information offered by an exclusive travel agency that might make him the first Mexican to visit the most famous shipwreck in the world.

“Miriam and Karla who work in my team and are great guys, they sent me an article regarding this tourist company that was promoting trips to the Titanic and I said ‘ok, let’s see what happens,'” he told Yordi Rosado in an interview.

“I filled it out, researched how much it cost, had a Zoom meeting with them, they explained how much it cost and I said ‘this is what I do, can I do it? Can I record it? They said yes.”

The next step was to collect the $125,000 that the trip cost at that time – today it is around $250,000 – so he took his savings, got the rest and made the reservation.

Upon arrival, he received all the paperwork he needed to sign.

“It was a bible, when I read it I was very scared, basically it said that if you die it is your problem. It said ‘I am aware that I am getting on an experimental submersible that has never descended to these depths. That there may be failures that cause injuries or death and that they are not the responsibility of the company. There I did feel and say ‘you are risking your life’ (…) but quitting was very expensive for me,” he said.

But at the last moment there was a problem with the submersible and they suspended their descent until the following year.

“I got a bit down because of the sponsors and because of the people who know them how they are, but seeing the dimension of the expedition I understood it.”

He returned the following year and finally made it on the expedition that, in the end, became the riskiest trip he has ever taken in his life, something that made him, at the time, more nervous than excited.

“The greatest risk of an expedition of this type, especially the one we did (…) is that you can get stuck with a piece of iron from the ship or with a fishing net, that happens to you and there is no way for someone to get off to rescue you, it is 3,800 meters there is no other submersible in the world that can come down to rescue you and, if there is, it is far enough for you to die before.

Finally, when he descended and was able to see the famous remains, he assured that it was all worth it.

“We looked out and yes it is very spectacular. Yes it is a very exciting moment (…) then I forgot everything.”
