Mexican state of Guerrero is shaken by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake

This meteorological phenomenon reemerged on Wednesday after having weakened upon making landfall on Monday in the same region, where five deaths were reported.

The earthquake, which activated the alarms in Mexico City, had its epicenter 40 kilometers south of Ciudad Altamirano, in Guerrero, at 1:03 p.m. local time (7:03 p.m. GMT). So far, the state government has not reported any damage or victims.

Tremor in the Mexican state of Guerrero

The earthquake occurred while Hurricane John was 75 kilometers southwest of Lázaro Cárdenas, in Michoacán, and 245 kilometers southeast of Manzanillo, in Colima, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

The circulation of this phenomenon causes intense and punctual rains, which exceed 250 millimeters in Colima, Michoacán and Guerrero.

According to the estimated trajectory, the category 1 hurricane would make landfall this Thursday in Michoacán, after having impacted the Costa Chica region in Guerrero on Monday.

The cyclone has surprised, since initially the SMN only anticipated that it would become a tropical storm that would degrade to a depression upon making landfall on Wednesday in Chiapas. However, it intensified, accelerated and changed direction on Monday, strengthening to reach a Category 3 hurricane and affecting Guerrero.

John is the second cyclone of the Pacific season to impact Mexico, after Storm Ileana, which last week affected the state of Sinaloa, in the northwest of the country, leaving minor damage.
