MORELIA, Mich., May 1, 2023.- In Mexico there are 179,000 medical students, but only 17,000 specialization residency places are offered per year, which translates into insufficient assets to guarantee coverage of specialists, whose main challenge is permanent updating.

This was stated by Daniel Alberto Díaz Martínez, secretary of health of Guanajuato and official speaker this Monday at the commemorative act for the 193rd anniversary of the Ignacio Chávez School of Medicine, of the Michoacán University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH).

“It is estimated that there are 179,000 medical students in universities throughout the country; If you want to enter a medical residence in Mexico, you must apply the National Examination for applicants for medical residences, an annual test that only offers regarding 17,000 places to doctors, ”he commented.

He mentioned that the number of women who study medicine and who subsequently complete a medical residency has gradually increased, and that currently the proportion of the female medical population is greater than that of the male.

“I think it is time to reflect and work together with universities, institutions that train human resources for health, so that, in the not too distant future, the rate of specialists is sufficient for the care model that Mexico requires,” he commented.

He mentioned that another of the challenges of medical training institutions is the permanent updating of medical knowledge, with educational programs that cover the latest advances in the different medical disciplines, since he pointed out that personalized medicine and genomics are transforming the way in which diagnose and treat diseases.

“Mexico faces several challenges in terms of public health; I anticipate medical students: they will face many challenges, they will need to constantly update themselves, adapt quickly to changes, learn to work as a team, be empathetic, and deal with bureaucracy. It is important to keep a positive attitude,” he expressed.
