Mexican medalist revives controversy with Jahir Ocampo – Fox Sports

The controversy between Ivan Garcia and Jahir Ocampo continues to generate discussion. Following Ocampo’s remarks, the medalist from London 2012 did not remain silent and shared a video on her X account, where she criticized the diver for ‘hoarding’ an accreditation that could have been used by a “physiatrist, a doctor, or a sports psychologist.”

The conflict began with a comment made by García on Claro Sports, reacting to Ocampo congratulating Osmar Olvera at the Aquatic Center after he won the bronze in the 3m springboard.

Jahir responded to Pollo in a video he posted on TikTok, stating that Ma Jin had not participated in any competitions since Tokyo 2020. Thus, at the request of the Chinese coach, he and Iván Bautista took on the role of Osmar’s coaches until the 2024 Olympic Games.

Ocampo also mentioned that he was present at the Olympics, “keeping up with all athletes and sponsors of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM).” Additionally, he noted that if he had made any of the parties, including Ma Jin and Osmar, uncomfortable, he would not have supported Olvera as he did at the Paris Aquatic Center.

Ivan Garcia’s response

Pollo replied to the TikTok video shared by Ocampo, clarifying that Ma Jin indeed could not accompany Olvera in the competitions leading up to Paris 2024; however, she revealed that this was due to a decision made by the Chinese coach.

“Your coach Ma Jin was indeed unable to attend any competitions after the Tokyo Olympics, and we must explain why: Conade established some very clear rules, and the coach decided to accept them.”

Although Jahir Ocampo pointed out that in Paris 2024 it was “the first time we felt a team atmosphere, in harmony” in diving, Ivan Garcia contested this and even suggested that he wanted to “manipulate things.”

“In the competitions leading up to these Olympic Games, yes, you were there supporting me, as was my coach Ivan Bautista, which shows that we know how to work as a team. Don’t start trying to manipulate things; everyone in the diving community knows how you operate..”

“You used an accreditation that you were not supposed to use, one that could have been utilized by a doctor, a physiatrist, a sports psychologist, or a nutritionist. This is the Olympic Games; extraordinary things happen here (…) It’s not just about bringing someone who claps really loudly. (…) I think that there are many Mexicans who would do it much better than you,” added Ivan Garcia.

Finally, Garcia, who won a silver medal in London 2012, stated that it would have been better to have used Ocampo’s accreditation to take an expert to support athletes with whatever they needed.

“Your job should have been to sit in the stands, buy a ticket, and cheer from above (…) the truth hurts a lot, but what can I say, my comment was never intended to divide Mexico. Consider the athletes’ perspective; they cope with the uncertainty of not knowing if they will be supported, even if they are not accompanied.” Sometimes coaches don’t attend because they don’t have accreditation, so let’s not play the hero.,” says Iván García.

The comment that sparked the feud

Tensions escalated between the Mexicans after Pollo Garcia stated during a broadcast that he did not understand why Ocampo was with Olvera and his team once the 3m springboard competition concluded.

“Everyone is now approaching Osmar to congratulate him. I still don’t understand what Jahir Ocampo is doing down there; he’s not a coach. He should be supporting Osmar from the stands. Osmar, don’t let them steal your spotlight; you are the important one; you are the champion,” remarked the medalist on Claro Sports.

When the comment reached him, Ocampo responded to Ivan via TikTok, and finally, Pollo posted the video on X, reviving the controversy.

The Ongoing Controversy Between Ivan Garcia and Jahir Ocampo: A Deep Dive

The controversy between Ivan Garcia and Jahir Ocampo continues to generate significant buzz in the diving community. Following Ocampo’s response to Garcia’s criticism, the London 2012 medalist did not remain silent. She shared a video on her X account, where she criticized Ocampo for ‘hoarding’ an accreditation that could have been utilized by a “physiatrist, a doctor, or a sports psychologist.”

The Root of the Conflict

This controversy kicked off when Ivan Garcia made a comment on Claro Sports, expressing confusion over Ocampo’s presence at the Aquatic Center after diver Osmar Olvera secured a bronze medal in the 3m springboard event. Garcia questioned Ocampo’s role, remarking that he should have been supporting Osmar from the stands rather than mingling with the team.

Jahir Ocampo’s Response

Jahir Ocampo later addressed the criticism in a TikTok video, clarifying that Ma Jin, the Chinese coach, had not competed in any events following the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. As a result, he and Ivan Bautista had to step in and guide Osmar until the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He went on to say that he was present to support all athletes and sponsors of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM), emphasizing his commitment to the team.

Ivan Garcia’s Counterarguments

In response to Ocampo’s remarks, Garcia clarified in his video that Ma Jin’s absence from competitions was due to decisions made by the Chinese coach in compliance with Conade regulations. He asserted, “Your coach Ma Jin was indeed unable to attend any competitions after the Tokyo Olympics, and we must explain why: Conade put some very clear rules on the table, and the coach decided to accept them.”

Garcia’s Accusations

Ivan Garcia further disputed Ocampo’s claim that this was the first time they felt a team atmosphere in diving. He accused Ocampo of trying to manipulate perceptions, stating, “In the competitions prior to these Olympic Games, yes, you were there supporting me, as was my coach Ivan Bautista, so that tells you that we do know how to work as a team.”

The Misuse of Accreditation

Garcia escalated his criticism by accusing Ocampo of misusing an accreditation that could have been allocated to essential support staff like doctors or psychologists. He expressed frustration that Ocampo’s presence, which he deemed unnecessary, detracted from the athletes’ experiences.

“It’s not just about bringing someone who claps really loudly,” Garcia said. “I think there are many Mexicans who would do it much better than you.” This line further emphasizes the depth of their disagreement regarding roles and responsibilities within the Mexican diving community.

Triggered Responses: The Initial Comment

Things escalated when Garcia remarked during a live broadcast, “Everyone is now approaching Osmar to congratulate him. I still don’t understand what Jahir Ocampo is doing down there; he’s not a coach.” He urged Osmar not to let anyone steal his spotlight, stating, “You are the important one; you are the champion.”

Reflections on Team Dynamics

This debate brings to light broader issues within the diving community and the essential roles played by coaches, trainers, and support staff. Garcia highlighted how critical these roles are by emphasizing that Ocampo’s encouragement from the stands could help athletes feel less isolated during competitions.

The Importance of Expert Support

Garcia concluded his remarks by stressing the need for expert support during competitions. “Your job was to be in the stands, buy a ticket, and cheer from above,” he said, reinforcing the notion that those who have accredited positions should prioritize athletes’ needs.

Conclusion: A Divided Community?

The exchange between Ivan Garcia and Jahir Ocampo reveals deep-seated tensions within the diving community. The validity of their respective arguments raises questions about the roles individuals play during pivotal moments for athletes. The ongoing feud serves as a reminder of the complexities in sports, where support, recognition, and visibility are often contested.
