The Mexican government and the migrants who were part of a new caravan bound for Mexico City agreed to put an end to it.
The National Institute of Migration of Mexico (INM) decided to regularize regarding 3,500 migrants who had left in a caravan from Tapachula heading north. In this sense, the authorities will deliver humanitarian visas to women traveling with children.
For their part, single men and women will receive documentation to transit through the territory of that country legally. They will have a period of 45 days to do so.
The migrants voted in favor of the proposal in an assembly by show of hands, from the central park of Villa Comaltitlán, in Chiapas, in the southern state of Mexico.
The officials have already begun the censuses in said public area, while the documents will be delivered to a shelter set up for this purpose.
In the case of children and families, the Office of the Attorney for the Defense of Minors will attend to their situation. The decision will be followed by the National Institute of Migration.
Migrants in Mexico
The Mexican authorities reported that they will not provide buses for the movement of migrants. However, by having documentation, they will be able to move legally through the country by their own means.
Many migrants have run out of money, and this government decision gives them the opportunity to continue on their way north. Many said that the first objective is to reach Mexico City.
In this sense, several people expressed their desire to continue this journey together, in order to avoid risks and setbacks with criminal gangs.
The final goal would undoubtedly be the United States. The dream of migrants is to reach the northern nation to work and give their family a better future.
Mexico has historically been a transit territory for thousands of people seeking to achieve the American dream.
