The Mexican Sergio ‘Checho’ Perez (Red Bull)second in the World Cup Formula Onewho finished fourth this Sunday at the Dutch Grand Prix, the thirteenth in the championship, declared at the Zandvoort circuit that they deserved “the podium” and that they did not achieve it, in a race in which he was penalized -at the end- with five seconds, for exceeding the speed limit, “it was a pity”.
“It has been a very unfortunate followingnoon, in the end, especially with the last decisions: the first one was good, but when we stopped to put the intermediate (tires) at the end, not everything was ready because I had to make the decision following it started to rain suddenly”, explained ‘Checo’, born 33 years ago in Guadalajara (Jalisco) and who is second in the World Cup, with 201 points, 138 less than the leader, his fellow Dutchman Max Verstappen, winner this Sunday before his audience.
“When I was coming into pit lane to put on intermediate gear I was completely inundated. I lost traction in the car and ended up hitting the wall, before slipping a bit, which caused me to exceed the permitted speed limit”, explained the brave driver from Guadalajara regarding the penalty that cost him what would have been his thirty-fourth podium in F1, in which he has six victories.
“You always know more things following the race, but in general terms the result is ‘ok’ taking into account the chaos that occurred this followingnoon,” he said.
“The team always has a broader vision when they are making decisions in the race; and I don’t have all the information in the car. That is why we have strategists and everyone makes decisions for the benefit of the team”, added the Mexican from Red Bull.
“We have good pace and it was clear that we deserved the podium today; so it was a shame that we didn’t make it”, commented ‘Checo’ following finishing fourth this Sunday in the Netherlands.
