The Mexican Army deployed 600 new members to the state of Sinaloa on Saturday to reinforce actions against the wave of violence that has been raging for just over two weeks in northwestern Mexico.
The deployment of the elements aims to “strengthen the operational actions already carried out by military personnel in the entity, in order to inhibit the activities of organized crime,” detailed in a note the Ninth Military Zone, attached to the Third Military Region of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).
These elements are added to the more than 1,600 soldiers who have moved to the northern state of Sinaloa, which has recorded more than 60 murders since September 9, following a fracture between cells of the Sinaloa Cartel, after the capture of its historic leader, Ismael ‘el Mayo’ Zambada.
“These officers will work with local authorities to reduce crime rates through joint actions that promote the preservation of order and public peace,” the statement added.
Sedena stated that the military forces will carry out deterrence and prevention tasks, as well as patrols and reconnaissance, in strict compliance with the laws on the use of force and respect for human rights.
“All these activities will be carried out in strict compliance with the National Law on the Use of Force, guaranteeing respect for human rights at all times,” the statement said.
The violence unleashed after Zambada was allegedly handed over to U.S. authorities on July 25 by Joaquín Guzmán López, one of the sons of Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, has also escalated to other states in northern Mexico.
On Friday, 11 bodies were found in the municipality of Ojinaga, in the state of Chihuahua, bordering the United States, in addition to another 15 deaths in Baja California, the same border region, and a total of 99 murders in different states in Mexican territory.
