SANTIAGO (AP) — Mexican Abraham Ancer scored a 67 on Sunday, five under par, to be crowned champion of the men’s golf tournament at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games following beating Colombian Sebastián Muñoz by one hit.

The “Turk” Ancer, 32, finished the tournament held at the Prince of Wales golf course with a cumulative score of 267, 21 under par, following four days, and that was enough for him to remain at the top of the podium.

Muñoz finished with a total of 268 to win the silver medal and the American Dylan Menante accumulated 271 to take the bronze medal.

Ancer’s medal was the last gold medal for Mexico in Santiago 2023. The delegation finished with a historical total of 52.

Ancer, who has one triumph on the PGA Tour by winning the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in 2021, began the tournament on Thursday with a round of four strokes under par, then finished with five on Friday and his best round was the day before when his accumulated Seven under par put him in position to take the gold.

In the women’s tournament, Sofía García obtained a comfortable victory to give Paraguay its first gold in these Pan American Games. García finished 15 strokes under par, escorted by Colombian María José Uribe (six strokes behind) and Canadian Alena Sharp.

García dominated from start to finish, taking over the lead from day one. His final round was not his best with a 72, par for the field, but it did not jeopardize the victory.
