“Mets suffer blow to rotation as Carlos Carrasco placed on DL with elbow inflammation”

LOS ANGELES – The Mets’ rotation took another blow Tuesday when the team placed Carlos Carrasco on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

Carrasco, who was scheduled to start Friday at San Francisco, went 0-2 with an 8.56 ERA in his first three starts. His velocity dropped noticeably in those games, and he walked as many (eight) as he struck out. Carrasco missed a start late in Spring Training because of what Mets manager Buck Showalter called “elbow maintenance,” describing it as typical of Carrasco. The veteran right-hander underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment from his elbow 18 months ago.

The Mets don’t have an obvious alternative to replace Carrasco in the rotation, although lefty Joey Lucchesi is pitching well at Triple-A Syracuse and would be an option. The team sent another starter, Jose Butto, back to Syracuse earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the Mets called up reliever Jeff Brigham from Syracuse to take Carrasco’s roster spot.

The Mets were already playing without two of their starters, Justin Verlander and José Quintana.
