Twenty-three years ago, dancer Methil Devika did not have to think for a second to give up the great joy of being the heroine of Satyan Anthikad’s ‘Kochu Kochu Santhoshile’. Because he was almost a decade old when he made a firm decision not to go into films. Since the age of 13, cinema has given Devika many opportunities. Even when he was invited to many films including ‘Kabuliwala’, the answer was ‘No’.
That decision, which might not be shaken despite the repeated efforts of the mentioned directors, has finally dissolved in front of the hard work of a newcomer. Methil Devika is reaching the big screen at the age of 46. Biju Menon as the heroine. Director Vishnu Mohan, who won the National Award for his first film ‘Mepadiyaan’, is making his second film with ‘Katha Innu Kaki’.
‘Why now?’ Devika has a definite answer to the question. Whenever I was invited to the film, I decided to stay in the field of dance. There is complete confidence that the decision was not even one percent wrong. She has received two national awards, two state awards including Kerala Sangeetnatak Akademi and an Oscar nomination for her archival film. She is the first dancer to receive a post-doctoral fellowship from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology under ISRO.
This is a study that I have conceptualized by combining art with science. Couldn’t you do so much by stepping into the field of classical dance? Nothing is greater for me than the joy I get from the dance floor. Vishnu is a very gifted young man. Vishnu has worked for more than a year to get me into this film. During this period it was realized that the film had the best screenplay. Vishnu tried to convince me that I was the only heroine in his mind. The shoot was planned and conducted in a way that fully respects my convenience and does not interfere with other things. This is the reason for agreeing to this film.’ Devika says that even though film acting is very different from dancing, she didn’t feel any church vibes in front of the camera.
Vishnu Mohan also says that he saw the actress who sat in Devika. ‘ The search for a new face that is very familiar but never seen on the big screen came to Devika.
Under the banner of Vishnu Mohan Stories, Vishnu and Jomon T., the cinematographer of the film, are in collaboration with Imagine Cinemas and Plan J Studios. John, editor Shameer Mohammad, Haris Desam and PB Anish are producing ‘Katha Innu Haki’.
