If you live in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Paraná and Goiás, you may have seen lights illuminating the sky last Monday night, June 19, around 7 pm. The phenomenon drew attention on social media and was confirmed by the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (BRAMON).

According to Digital Look, reports say they saw a trail of lights crossing the sky. Social networks were quickly flooded with videos and photos showing the incident.

In São Paulo, reports came from the cities of Araraquara, Pirassununga, Mococa, Rio Claro, Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, Descalvado, São Carlos, São José dos Campos and Colombia.

The miners saw the lights in several cities like Barbacena, as shown in the video below, in addition to Uberlândia, Sacramento, Araxá, Guimarânia, Patrocínio and Carmo do Paranaíba.

According to the IDS Meteor Observatory, it is not yet known whether the object that caused the phenomenon is a meteor or space debris re-entering the atmosphere.

Marcelo Zurita, president of the Associação Paraibana de Astronomia (APA), member of the Brazilian Astronomical Society (SAB) and technical director of BRAMON, generated the following map according to the visualization reports.

The expert claims that BRAMON’s calculations say that the object is a meteorite that passed at a speed of 53,100 km/h through the atmosphere, slowly breaking up at an angle of 4.9º in relation to the ground. The total route was 442.2 km from Serra da Piedade (MG) to Elias Fausto, SP, where it disappeared following 30 seconds.

There are no records of damage caused by the fall of the object, as it must have completely disintegrated before reaching the ground due to the very high speed and friction with the atmosphere.

The last visualization of such a bright meteor in Brazil took place in February 2023 in the south of the country in the regions of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
