The National Center of Meteorology reassured the country’s residents that the impact of the earthquakes that occurred at dawn today, Saturday in southern Iran, their effects do not exceed the feeling of the earthquake, without causing any other damage, on the grounds that their source is from outside the country, and that the designs of buildings in the country are subject to building resistance codes. for earthquakes.

Khamis Seif Al Shamsi, Director of the Earthquake Department at the National Center of Meteorology, told Al-Ittihad that the earthquake that struck southern Iran in the early hours of yesterday morning (Saturday) reached a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, and was felt by the residents of the country, especially the northern regions of the country as a result of their feelings. He said: The region of southern Iran has witnessed, during the past two weeks, an activity of earthquakes and tremors that follow them, stressing that there is no need for the people of the country to fear these earthquakes, especially since their source is outside the United Arab Emirates, and they are the result of activity in the area of ​​​​the borders of the Arab plate with the plate. Euro-Asiatic, which is caused by the movement of faults in the plate.

He stressed that the effects of earthquakes are only felt in the country, without causing any damage to buildings, citing the state’s previous impact on the earthquakes that followed the earthquake that struck southern Pakistan and reached an intensity of 8 on the Richter scale, and also its effects receded by feeling the tremor without arranging any damage to buildings. in the state.

Al Qubaisi assured the public that the UAE does not have strong seismic activity, but there is light activity on the eastern coast, specifically in the Dibba Masafi area, and the intensity of earthquakes usually does not exceed 3 degrees on the Richter scale.

Regarding the state’s capabilities in seismic monitoring, Al Qubaisi explained that the National Center of Meteorology has 21 seismic monitoring stations, and 70 networks for monitoring earthquakes, and the center has links with the international seismic monitoring network, and it is linked with most of the monitoring networks of the Arab Gulf states, which contributes to understanding the nature of the earthquake.
