Meta intends to be at the forefront in the field of augmented reality. We should soon have a glimpse of the connected glasses on which the group led by Mark Zuckerberg has been working for years and which is known internally as the Orion project. The parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp plans to demonstrate “real” augmented reality glasses this fall during the annual Meta Connect conference dedicated to developers, according to Business Insider, which cites anonymous sources. “There is therefore internal pressure to ensure a high level of performance,” they told the American media.
These future “high-tech” augmented reality glasses, developed by the Reality Labs division of the technology group, are a distinct product from the connected glasses produced with the Ray-Ban brand, which are limited to recording videos thanks to its integrated cameras or to broadcast sound, or the Meta Quest mixed reality headset. They aim to offer an immersive augmented reality visual experience in a device resembling standard glasses.
One of the sources said a handful of Meta employees had already tested advanced prototypes of the product. However, the American tech giant does not plan to market the product to the general public following the presentation. Last year, Meta’s chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, said the product was at this stage still too expensive for a consumer product and that Meta was focusing its efforts on reducing the cost of production, ahead of a planned launch. for the general public in 2027.
