MAGNITOGORSK /Chelyabinsk region/, March 17. /TASS/. Magnitogorsk Metallurg beat Moscow Spartak with a score of 4:0 in the first match of the quarterfinal playoff series of the Fonbet – Continental Hockey League (KHL). The meeting took place in Magnitogorsk.

The winners scored goals from Luke Johnson (9th minute), Dmitry Silantyev (13), Egor Yakovlev (37) and Nikita Grebenkin (60).

Metallurg took the lead in the best-of-four series with a score of 1-0. The second match of the confrontation will take place on March 19 in Magnitogorsk. For the first time in KHL history, the second stage of the playoffs uses a crossover system, in which teams from the Western and Eastern conferences play each other.

The Magnitogorsk team took first place in the Eastern Conference and beat Khabarovsk Amur (4-2) in the first round of the playoffs. “Spartak” became fourth in the Western Conference and at the previous stage knocked out Cherepovets “Severstal” (4-1).

Spartak forward Ilya Kovalchuk missed the fourth match in a row in the playoffs. The red-white coaching staff did not make a single change in the lineup compared to the fifth meeting once morest Severstal (5:1).
