From Monday morning to Wednesday there will be hourly warning strikes in the majority of companies in the metal technology industry. The elevator fitters will kick things off in Vienna in the presence of ÖGB boss Wolfgang Katzian and AK President Renate Anderl. On Thursday, the social partners will meet once more at the negotiating table to attempt to reach agreement on the 2024 collective agreement in the fifth round of talks.
The employers made some concessions to the unions in the fourth round, but are still far from what PRO-GE and GPA are demanding – namely 11.6 percent more wages and salaries. The industry has presented two models, one of which envisages a two-year calculation period, which the unions reject. If there is no agreement even following the warning strike, regular strikes might follow.
The strike statistics in the metal industry show two major work stoppages in the recent past: in 2011 there were strikes in around 200 companies with 100,000 employees and in 2018 in over 240 companies with more than 70,000 employees.
Some drivers are likely to feel the impact of the start of the strike on Monday morning in Vienna. The start will take place on Triester Straße near Wienerbergstraße, and the road closure will be announced from 6:30 a.m. The end is scheduled for around 10:30 a.m.
