Following the departure of Hideo Kojima from Konami, many considered the Metal Gear franchise dead. Even more so if we take into account that the first game in the franchise without the Japanese creative in charge was the forgettable Metal Gear Survive. This last game meant for many the final closure and a shelving of what once might be.
But the IP is still Konami’s, so it is possible that the Japanese company wants to exploit the franchise in some way. In fact, the possibility of a remake of the first installment has been rumored for quite some time. This is a less risky possibility for the company, so it would make sense to bet on it before embarking on a new installment.
Would Metal Gear be back?
Now, and to fuel the rumors a little more, Noriaki Okamura has commented to the Japanese magazine Famitsu, that this is going to be a year with many announcements from Konami, including a “long-awaited revelation”. I can’t think of anything more expected than the return to life of Metal Gear, since we already have several Silent Hill announcements. Possibly, the rumors regarding the remake have ended up being a trial balloon that has come in handy for the Japanese.
Even so, I recommend keeping your expectations moderate; Konami has a pretty long history of disappointment, and the announcement might end up being anything else, even a new Pachinko. In fact, I remember that not long ago the person who promoted the rumors regarding the return to life of the franchise, he confessed that he had invented everything.
