Russia has banned Facebook and Instagram in retaliation for its strong stance once morest the Ukrainian occupation. At the same time, the messaging app WhatsApp has not yet been banned in the country. But Telegram, another messaging app, is now making waves in Russia. One of Russia’s four leading telecom operators, Megaphone, has announced that Telegram is now the number one telecom operator in the country.
According to Megaphone, Telegram’s share of mobile internet traffic rose from 48 percent in the first two weeks of February to 63 percent in the first two weeks of March. But WhatsApp’s share has dropped from 48 to 32 percent. At the same time, the average Telegram consumer consumes 101 MB of data per day, while the WhatsApp user uses only 26 MB.
Telegram, a Russian – made app, is the second most popular messaging app following WhatsApp in many countries, including India. Telegram is widely accepted for being able to easily send any type of file up to two GB in size.
Telegram, founded by Russian Pavel Durov, is one of Russia’s leading news platforms. The Telegram has been gaining momentum in Russia since February 24, when Russia began its occupation of Ukraine.
