Metabolic Abnormality-Related Fatty Liver Disease and Cardiovascular Disease Risk: Groundbreaking Research Findings

A domestic research team has discovered for the first time that the risk of developing cardiovascular disease is increased in patients with fatty liver disease related to metabolic abnormalities compared to normal controls.

The research team at Yonsei University Severance Hospital (Professor Kim Seung-up, Department of Gastroenterology, Professor Ho-gyu Lee, Clinical Lecturer, Hyuk-hee Lee, Department of Prevention) and Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital (Professor Han-ah Lee, Department of Gastroenterology) announced the results of analyzing data from 9.7 million people who underwent domestic health checkups. .

In this study, the research team confirmed that the prevalence of patients with the newly named metabolic abnormality-related fatty liver disease reached 27.5%, and that their risk of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction, heart failure, and cardiovascular disease-related death, was 1.39 times higher than that of the normal control group.

Additionally, it was reported that patients with fatty liver disease related to metabolic abnormalities, who are heavy drinkers, or who have other types of liver diseases such as viral hepatitis, also have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in patients with fatty liver disease. Recently, in order to better select and manage patients at this risk, the American-European Association for the Study of the Liver Association jointly reorganized the classification system for fatty liver disease, and among these, fatty liver disease associated with metabolic abnormalities is fatty liver disease. It is defined as a case that is accompanied by one or more metabolic abnormalities.

This study was published under the topic ‘Patients with fatty liver disease associated with metabolic abnormalities and the risk of cardiovascular disease’ in ‘Gut’ (citation index 24.5), the most authoritative international journal in the field of hepatology and a top 10% journal in the gastrointestinal and liver fields. .

The results of this study have important clinical significance in that they showed that patients with metabolic abnormality-related fatty liver disease, which has a very high prevalence both domestically and internationally, have a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, a serious disease that can lead to complications, hospitalization, and death.

Professor Seung-eop Kim of the Department of Gastroenterology at Severance Hospital and Professor Ho-gyu Lee of the Department of Prevention at Yonsei University School of Medicine, who are responsible for the study, emphasized, “It is very important to take active interest in and treat patients with fatty liver disease related to metabolic abnormalities.”

Professor Han-ah Lee of the Department of Gastroenterology at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital, the lead author of this study, said, “As the domestic prevalence of fatty liver disease related to metabolic abnormalities is high, systematic management at the national level is necessary.”
