The Metaverse is on track to be a bonanza for Meta. The American giant has indeed planned to receive a significant commission on each purchase made within Horizon Worlds, its virtual reality platform.
Meta is still actively working on the development of its metaverse, Horizon Worlds. The group is currently in the process of building the complete ecosystem that will support it. It is therefore in particular on the economic system and on the way of being remunerated that the various projects relate. After the recent announcement ofa possible virtual currency for the metaverse, Meta has now lifted the lid on one of the planned revenue streams. Indeed, in addition to the profits generated by targeted via users’ personal and biometric dataMeta would set up commissions on the sale of items.
A double commission on the virtual shops of Meta
There will actually be two commissions applied to item creators and sellers. The first, of 25%, will concern all items sold within Horizon Worlds, the virtual reality world created by Meta. These may in particular be fashion accessories to personalize the avatar.
The second, which already exists, is the one applied in the Meta Quest Store and which amounts to 30%. This shop is the one used by virtual reality headsets of Meta, namely theOculus Quest and theOculus Rift. It is also via the Meta Quest Store that it is possible to download Horizon Worlds. However, the Meta Quest Store takes a 30% commission upstream on all transactions carried out on the platform.
Thus, the 30% is deducted initially, then the 25% on Horizon Worlds are taken from the remaining 70%. In the end, Meta takes 47.5% of an item’s price from its seller.
Meta confirms and assumes these amounts
A Meta spokesperson confirmed this calculation with Business Insider who investigated:If a creator sells an item for one dollar, the commission taken by the Meta Quest Store will be 30 cents, and that of the Horizon Worlds platform will be 17 cents (25% of what remains). Ultimately, the user will therefore receive 53 cents, before any applicable tax”.
Combined, these two taxes amount to 47.5%. Any seller on this platform will therefore receive little more than half of the initial sale price. A high amount, which does not seem to bother Mark Zuckerberg who nevertheless recently criticized the commissions taken by Apple, and which are nevertheless lower.
Meta, however, made a point of explaining that the presence of Horizon Worlds would in the future be extended to other platforms than the Oculus, and thus the commissions would not always go to Meta. Pending this expansion, Meta is currently testing the sales system onHorizon Worlds from a handful of users.
