According to the The Wall Street Journala Meta is in negotiations with data protection regulators at European Union. The objective would be to launch a signature for your services in the region that does not contain advertisements.

According to the report, Meta is evaluating the possibility of giving users the choice between paying an estimated monthly fee of US$14 a US$17 to use its services without advertisements or opt for personalized advertisements.

The decision comes as a response to the legal challenges faced by the company due to its practices within the economic bloc. There, Meta has been accused of illegally tracking and profiling users’ activities to target advertisements.

O General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) The EU defines strict criteria for user consent to data processing, requiring it to be informed, specific and voluntary.

Privacy advocates, including the organization NOYB (None of Your Business), are concerned about the possible charge, however, pointing out that fundamental rights should not only be accessible to those who have financial resources.

Furthermore, they believe this measure could create a divide between those who can afford privacy and those who cannot, possibly violating users’ data protection rights.

If it progresses with its plans, Meta will have to be questioned in court about the legality of this signature. NOYB, for example, has already committed to contesting any action in this regard.

On the other hand, according to the WSJEuropean Union data protection authorities are also keeping an eye on the situation, especially regarding the impact on user choice and possible power imbalances.

When asked about these plans, Meta chose not to confirm or deny the initiative, however, it emphasized its continued commitment to offering free services supported by personalized advertisements.
