Facebook’s renaming to Meta has been the subject of much discussion, as it might potentially allow the platform to escape some of the controversy in which it was embroiled.
It also indicates that the social media company is starting to focus more on the metaverse, which is undoubtedly a new technology that countless large companies are trying to engage with.
However, it is important to note that Meta may continue to follow users very closely once it launches its metaverse. This comes from several patents the company has recently filed which are essentially intended to allow it to track eye movements and facial expressions in the metaverse, and it might pose a privacy issue.
Probably the main reason Meta would be interested in doing such a thing is that it would benefit advertisers. However, it can also have something to do with graphics optimization. If a user is looking at a particular spot, the graphics in that area will be boosted and the rest will become slightly blurrier in order to use much less processing power.
It’s similar to what Netflix is doing with its content library, but the angle may be cause for alarm for a wide range of users. Meta is likely to continue to derive most of its revenue from the sale of advertisements, and being involved in the metaverse might allow the company to track users in a way that was not possible before.
