Meta Denies Reports of Quest Headset Design Being Outsourced to Goertek
Meta has publicly refuted recent reports claiming a shift in design responsibilities for its popular Quest VR headsets. The rumors, previously circulating online, suggested plans to outsource design solely to Goertek, Meta’s Chinese manufacturing partner.
This claim was first ignited last week by former VR developer Cix Liv, who asserted Meta’s in-house design team for the headsets was being dismantled. Cix even predicted mass layoffs within Meta’s Reality Labs division.
Meta CTO Boz, however, refuted the claim vigorously on platform X, flatly stating, "False"
Goertek has long been a close partner with Meta, collaborating on design for manufacturability of previous Quest models. These initial rumors, however, suggested a more substantial shift, with the entire design process potentially transitioning to Goertek.
It first emerged from a report, published by The Information, which indicates Meta intends to further shift design responsibilities toward Goertek, citing sources who claim parts. This includes components like lenses and displays. The report even alleges that Meta intends for Goertek to take full design control by 2030.
