Instagram e Threads will no longer recommend publications with political-related content to their users. This is a determination by Meta, which did not explain in great detail how this initiative will work in practice, but confirmed that it should come into force in the coming weeks.
Adam Mosseri, from Instagram, spoke regarding the subject and said that anyone who follows accounts of people involved in politics will continue to receive posts normally. However, the proactive way of indicating posts within the platforms will no longer happen. Apparently, the decision also affects the Reels section, as well as the application’s explore.
He also commented on the definition of the owner of both social networks:
Our definition of political content is content that is likely to be regarding government or election-related topics; for example, posts regarding laws, elections or social issues. These global issues are complex and dynamic, which means this definition will evolve as we continue to engage with the people and communities who use our platforms and external experts to refine our approach.
Mosseri also took the opportunity to say that Meta does not want to encourage users to create publications regarding politics and hard news. According to him: “Our goal is to preserve people’s ability to choose to interact with political content while respecting each person’s appetite for it.“.
It remains to be seen what the community’s reaction will be to this change. Anyone concerned regarding the change can check the “status to count” in settings to see if your account is eligible to have recommended posts.
