Earlier this month, information emerged that the Meta was planning to offer a subscription plan for its apps on Europa with the purpose of removing ads and, consequently, limiting user tracking — something it was forced to do due to the guidelines of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
This has materialized and, today, the Goal announced which will offer ad-free access to Facebook and to Instagram with a signature. According to the giant, the plan will be available from November by €10 monthly (subscribing online) or €13 monthly (through apps on iOS/Android).
The subscription will be offered to anyone in the European Union, according to Meta — except for users under 18, whose accounts will have ads temporarily disabled from 11/6, as per information from Wall Street Journal.
As stated, the subscription is a response to increased regulations on how user data is collected and used in Europe. In its statement, Meta cited the EU Court of Justice ruling that companies should consider offering an alternative service to customers who do not want their data to be sold to advertisers, so that “if necessary, for an appropriate rate.”
We will continue to advocate for an ad-supported Internet, even with our new subscription offering in the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. But we respect the spirit and purpose of evolving European regulations and are committed to complying with them.
It’s worth noting that Meta will continue to offer ad-supported versions of these apps in Europe — at no additional cost.
Additionally, although the subscription initially covers all of a user’s accounts, from March 2024, Meta will additionally charge €6 on the web and €8 on mobile apps (both per month) for each extra account.
