Meta Platforms has decided to modify how users access its virtual reality headsets, reversing a previous change to require accounts from “Facebook”The company’s most prominent applications on devices.
The CEO said, Mark ZuckerbergIn a Facebook post today, Thursday, the company said the company will roll out its new “meta accounts” starting in August.
Meta previously asked users to use their Facebook accounts to access the headphones. The backlash led Meta to announce in October that it would change course.
“When we announced that we’d start asking people to sign in to Quest with their Facebook account, we got a lot of feedback from users,” Zuckerberg said today.
“We took this feedback into account as we designed a new ‘meta’ account structure that gives people flexibility and control.”
Zuckerberg is trying to convince investors and a certain subset of customers that the company is moving away from Facebook as it develops “Metaverse”.
But Meta still gets all of its revenue from its Facebook suite of apps.
The Meta division responsible for developing Metaverse also recorded a loss of $10 billion in 2021.
Zuckerberg’s vision for “Metaverse” includes a variety of virtual worlds that can be accessed through virtual and augmented reality technologies.
Although virtual and augmented reality headsets are still niche devices in a world dominated by smartphones, the Facebook founder pointed out that they represent the future of computing.
Zuckerberg recently said he envisions a billion users spending hundreds of dollars on Metaverse in the second half of the decade.
