(Ecofin Agency) – 184 former Meta content moderators who worked for its former subcontractor accuse the company of having dismissed them because they joined a union and Meta of having blacklisted them at the new subcontractor. The Kenyan courts gave them 21 days to find an agreement.
In Kenya, a court has just given Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and the content moderators who are suing it for unfair dismissal, 21 days to settle their dispute out of court. The information has just been made public by a court order dating back a few hours.
“The parties should seek an out-of-court settlement of this request through mediation”, recommended the court. The order named the former Chief Justice of Kenya, Willy Mutunga, and Hellen Apiyo, the Acting Labor Commissioner of the Ministry of Employment, as mediators. Within 21 days, if the parties do not agree, the case will go to court.
A few months ago, the Kenyan courts declared themselves competent to judge the dispute between the 184 content moderators and Meta, its former subcontractor Sama and the new one, Majorel. The plaintiffs accuse Sama of having fired them for having created a union. They also accuse Meta and Majorel of having blacklisted them during the process of recruiting new content moderators.
