The Met Unveils Plans for its $500 Million Modern and Contemporary Art Wing
After years of anticipation, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has unveiled designs for its highly anticipated $500 million wing dedicated to modern and contemporary art. This ambitious project, slated to open in 2026, will add a stunning 172,000 square feet to the museum, significantly expanding its capacity to showcase important modern and contemporary art.
## A Gateway to the Modern
The new wing will be located just north of the museum’s existing structure, seamlessly connecting to the main building via a transparent bridge. The groundbreaking design, envisioned by architect David Chipperfield, will feature generous gallery spaces flooded with natural light, creating an immersive and inviting environment for Museum visitors to engage with these transformative artworks.
“We envision this new wing as a gateway to modern and contemporary art, inviting visitors on an inspiring journey through the complexities and innovations of these influential periods,” said Max Hollein, the Met Director.
“The size and flexibility of the galleries will enable us to present both individual works of art in focused exhibits and diverse installations, symbolizing the dynamism of modern and contemporary art forms.”

One of the core focuses of the new wing will be fostering a deeper engagement with contemporary artists and their creative processes. To accomplish this,
the design includes a dedicated studio space where artists can work on site, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the creative process and fostering a unique connection with these artists.
