Lionel Messi led his team, Inter Miami, to capture the “Fans’ Shield” title in the American League after defeating the Columbus Crew with a score of “3-2” in the match that brought the two teams together at dawn on Thursday.
Messi etched his name in the annals of history by expanding his world record as the most decorated player of all time by winning the 46th championship in his career.
It is also the second title he won with Inter Miami, as the Fans’ Shield was added to the League Cup that the team won after Messi joined the club in 2023.
Inter Miami captain Messi scored two goals in the first half, then Luis Suarez added another goal in the second half.
Inter Miami maintained the win, achieving the American League Supporters’ Shield for the first time in the club’s history, thus confirming its place in the American League playoffs.
Messi joked with his teammates while raising the cup in the changing room during the loud celebrations, saying: “It is heavy.”
Although Messi was absent from the field for nearly two months due to an ankle injury, he played a decisive role in his team achieving the Supporters’ Shield title, as he scored 17 goals in addition to providing 15 other assists.
Lionel Messi won the Copa America title with Argentina in July 2024, and hopes to win the American League Cup title on December 7, adding to his tally a new record with the 47th championship in his career.
Before joining Inter Miami, he also won 35 titles with FC Barcelona, including four Champions League titles and 10 Spanish League titles. He also won three titles with Paris Saint-Germain, in addition to winning two Copa America championships, the “Finalisima” championship, and the 2022 World Cup.
Inter Miami raised its score to 68 points, topping the American League standings, while Columbus’ score stopped at 57 points in second place.
