Samsung changed a feature of the Galaxy S22 and S22+ following their announcement. This detail did not go unnoticed.
The Galaxy S22 are there ! They were announced presented during Unpacked 2022, we took them in hand, starting with the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plusbut also the S22 Ultra.
The tests should arrive soon. In the meantime, Samsung has just modified one of the characteristics of the Galaxy S22. The Korean manufacturer claimed that all three models had a 120Hz refresh rate, which matches last year’s Galaxy S21s. Only the Galaxy S22 Ultra can however vary its refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz, thanks to its LTPO 2.0 technology.
From 48 to 120Hz
In comparison, Samsung explained that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ have a refresh rate that can go down to 10Hz, as explained on the official website right following the announcement. However, Samsung has changed this feature. As shown in the screenshot below, it now says Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ can only fluctuate between 48-120Hz. Why? Because neither the Galaxy S22 nor the Galaxy S22+ have LTPO technology, they use LTPS.
LTPS (Low Temperature PolySilicon) or LTPO are backplane technologies. It is what we can compare to a motherboard. Indeed, it does not integrate processors or storage management, but the latter is a structure that can accommodate the diodes of the screen. This is where the diodes are connected and powered, and thus determine the display definition, the refresh rate, or even the energy consumption.
Precisely, it is difficult to know precisely the consequences of this change for the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. However, it is a safe bet that this has an impact on autonomy, more or less limited. The first testers, including Marques Brownlee, are concerned regarding the autonomy of the Galaxy S22, in particular the standard model. With a battery capacity of 3700 mAh, we will have to wait for the first tests to draw conclusions.
Tweeting from the S22 Ultra right now to say: I’m worried regarding the battery life on the small S22. It has a smaller battery than last year: 3700mah powering what we’ve found out is NOT an LTPO display. And it looks like Samsung avoided giving it to reviewers, including myself ????
