On Sunday morning, two touring skiers were hit and buried by an avalanche in San Bernardino at the Pass dei Omenit. One of the two men has died.
An experienced tourer died when an avalanche fell.
A family of four started a ski tour towards Passo dei Omenit in San Bernardino GR on Sunday morning. But shortly before reaching the destination, at 2651 m above sea level, an avalanche broke out under the father and one of the sons, which carried the two tourers around 150 meters away, according to the Graubünden cantonal police.
While the son was able to free himself from the masses of snow, the father was completely buried. This might be located by the other members of the group using avalanche transceivers, but might not be recovered immediately. The casualty was taken to Zurich University Hospital in critical condition, where he died on Sunday followingnoon. The cantonal police, together with the Graubünden public prosecutor’s office, have started investigating this avalanche accident. (chs)
