Merz: German Peacekeepers in Ukraine Only With Russian Consent

Germany‘s participation in peacekeeping operations requires a mandate that complies with international law, the leader of the opposition CDU said.

However, the key factor is Russia‘s consent. Without it, such a mission would not be effective and could escalate the situation, explained Merc.

“If a peace agreement is reached and Ukraine demands security guarantees, we can only talk about it if there is a clear mandate under international law. At the moment I don’t see it,” said the politician.

“I would like such a mandate to be granted based on consensus with Russia, not in conflict,” he added.

Merz is the chancellor candidate of the CDU and the Christian Social Union bloc (CDU/CSU) and the current chancellor’s Social Democrat (SPD) Olaf Scholz’s main rival for the post.

According to the latest opinion polls, 31% of Germans are ready to vote for the CDU/CSU, 20% for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), and 17% for the SPD.

Another 12% are ready to vote for the Greens, and 7% – for the left-wing populist Zara Wagenknecht Union (BSW), according to a survey by the research center INSA.

In a conversation with the media on December 20, the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Heorhiy Tikhy said that several countries are already considering the possibility of getting involved in sending a possible contingent of Western allies to Ukraine, as suggested by French President Emmanuel Macron.

However, the discussion on this topic is still at an early stage, Tychy said.

Ukraine is actively involved in these discussions, and the principle “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” is still observed, said the representative of the ministry.

When⁤ a function takes keyword arguments, you can use this mechanism to pre-set the value of a specific argument, like the⁣ second one, while leaving others unbound.
