Mérida begins the 2024-2025 blue crab capture season

Mérida has started the blue crab capture season, corresponding to the period 2024-2025, which extends from October 15 to August 14 of next year. This activity involves more than 200 fishermen organized into three fishermen’s councils throughout the port of Palmarito.

Leonardo Pirela, state director of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, reported that this harvest has officially begun, taking a tour along the coastal axis to guarantee compliance with regulations, which include the capture of crabs of a minimum size of eight centimeters. In addition, the use of authorized fishing gear has been certified to ensure the success of the harvest.

It is important to highlight that Mérida has a crab processing plant, which had positive results in the previous 2023-2024 harvest. In collaboration with the Government of Mérida and the National Center for Scientific Research in Fisheries and Aquaculture (Cenipa), the Ministry of Fisheries has also initiated research focused on the sustainability and sustainability of blue crab.

The coastal axis of Mérida stands out for having completed the total catch, thanks to the implementation of regulations that regulate this fishing activity, and the policies implemented by the Bolivarian Government.
