Mercury: Tuna still contaminated

A research group explains in the journal “Environmental Science & Technology Letters” that there is still a lot of mercury deposited at depths of more than 50 meters below the ocean surface, which repeatedly finds its way into the food chain. Mercury accumulates in aquatic food webs in the form of the highly toxic methylmercury. Long-lived predatory fish such as halibut, swordfish and tuna are particularly affected. Mercury is difficult to excrete from the body. If a predatory fish regularly eats animals with elevated mercury concentrations, the mercury accumulates in its muscles.
