The environmental organization Greenpeace has warned once morest the import of hazardous substances with a view to a planned trade agreement between the EU and the South American state federation Mercosur. The agreement threatens to promote trade in pesticides. “Trade agreements that increase production, trade and use of chemical pesticides should be a thing of the past,” the environmentalists say.
The EU-Mercosur deal would increase both the amount of pesticides used and the amount of pesticide-contaminated products sold in the EU. The agreement must therefore be stopped, Greenpeace demanded.
According to Greenpeace, Brazilian limes sold in supermarkets in eight EU countries were tested for pesticide contamination. These limes have been tested in an accredited and certified laboratory. The laboratory found residues of numerous pesticides that are manufactured in Europe and exported to Brazil.
“These results are further evidence that toxic substances, some of which are banned in the EU, are being exported to Brazil and making their way back to Europe in the form of residues on food,” Greenpeace said. “This is already happening without the FTA and it is expected to increase with the EU-Mercosur deal.”
Greenpeace calls for effective and comprehensive national and EU export bans to ban the export of all pesticides and other chemicals dangerous to human health, the environment and biodiversity.
