Mercosur Expands Territory and Strengthens Influence with New Members
Megaregional Bloc Gathers Momentum Ahead of Key Summit
The Mercosur bloc is gearing up for its 65th Summit in Montevideo, set to be a landmark event marked by the inclusion of two new members: Bolivia, officially inducted last August, and Panama, which is making its debut as an associated state. With these additions, Mercosur is poised to redefine its influence, not just in South America, but potentially across the globe.
The expansion solidifies Mercosur’s standing as a major regional powerhouse.
“From a territorial perspective, it will become the third largest country in the world,”
remarked Gisela Padovan, Brazilian Ambassador to Palazzo Itamaraty and Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean.
With Bolivia joining as the fifth full member, panto, the bloc now encompasses 73% of South America’s territory and represents 65% of its population.

Panamanian accession grants the bloc access to new markets and expands its influence in the region. With a voice and its own priority on theORGANIZATION, Panama sets the stage for tighter regional ties and collaboration.
Bolstering Global Presence
“This provides Mercosur with a strong global outlook,” stated Padovan, underscoring that its expansion will be pivotal in any future negotiations the bloc undertakes with other regional groupings
