The governments of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay denied the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, the opportunity to make an intervention during the LX summit of presidents of Mercosur, announced a spokesman for the Paraguayan pro tempore presidency this Wednesday (07.20.2022). .
“There was no consensus. The Ukrainian ambassador to Argentina who was concurrent in Paraguay was informed. The foreign minister himself made the communication,” said Raúl Cano, Paraguay’s deputy foreign minister, at a press conference.
Cano clarified that all the bloc’s decisions are made by consensus, but he excused himself from identifying the country or countries that opposed Zelenski’s intervention.
“Who is in favor and who is once morest, I don’t know which State did not agree. Nor can we divulge the State that did not give its consent,” he said.
Zelesnki communicated last week with the Paraguayan head of state Mario Abdo in his capacity as president pro tempore of the regional bloc, to request a space for virtual participation within the Asunción summit.
In his communication with Abdo, President Zelensky thanked the South American country for its help since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.
