At the stage in Baku, Mercedes continued to have problems with the buildup of the car on the straights, but the team believes that following the Canadian Grand Prix they will better understand how to eliminate them. The head of Mercedes Toto Wolff said that at the next stage in Montreal, engineers intend to conduct several experiments that should suggest a further direction for the development of the W13.
“I fully admit that we would take a big step forward if we might work a day or two on the tests,” Wolff is quoted as saying by Racefans. “However, we do not have such an opportunity as everyone else. Next weekends we will experiment more. We can afford it, because at the moment we do not claim to win the race and are behind the top teams.
During the sessions on the track, we will not focus on optimizing the car for specific conditions, but on better understanding the whole picture. This is exactly the task we have for the race in Baku and the stage in Montreal.
In Barcelona, the team took a big step forward. In other words, we have a solution to the problem of buildup for a track with smooth asphalt and no bumps – we understand how to set up a car in such conditions.
In Montreal, we will be able to get an idea of working on a different type of track – where there are a lot of bumps and high curbs. I expect that following Montreal we will understand the car better. We know why the car lacks speed, but we don’t have an answer to the question of what would be the best solution. That’s why we keep experimenting.”
